Sony XZ Premium brings 4K HDR to the mobile: everything you need to know
Computex 2017 runs all this week, with the biggest brands present at the huge event in Taipei, Taiwan. It’s arguably the most important show of the year for the desktop, laptop and components you’ll want to buy.
This is the show for folks who are left disillusioned by the lack of overclocking competitions and talk of gigahertz and teraflops at more mainstream tech expos, like CES in Las Vegas.
While we’ve already seen some of the wares that key computer makers will show off, namely that of Acer and MSI, there’s plenty more still behind all manner of curtains and veils.
However, recent leaks and announcements from the firms yet to break their big news of the show can help us make some educated guesses as to what we might see.
Here’s everything we’ve seen so far (and what else we expect) from the biggest computing companies in Taipei from May 30 through June 3.
The launches of Computex 2017
Everything that we’ve covered at Computex 2017 so far will populate the following space in reverse chronological order:
Aorus’ temptingly priced external GPU turbocharges your laptop’s graphics
Have you been mulling an external GPU for your notebook? But perhaps you’re put off by the cost of the things, or their bulkiness, or proprietary nature in some cases? Then the new Aorus GTX 1070 Gaming Box might be just the ticket, providing a more affordable external graphics solution which is very compact, not to mention compatible with any notebook that has a Thunderbolt 3 port.
Acer has us in something of a spin with its latest budget laptop
We got to spend hands-on time with the Acer Spin 1, which is priced like a budget laptop, but certainly not built like one. It benefits from an all-metal chassis, among other boons such as a Full HD screen, at a very tempting price point. Indeed, we described the value-for-money inherent here as ‘absolutely bonkers’, no less.
What can Computex tell us about life after Moore’s Law?
One of the highlights of Computex was witnessing Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang talk about life after Moore’s Law – the dwindling of which theoretically threatens to slow the march of technological progress.
We’ve got an in-depth opinion piece right here that examines how manufacturers are improving their devices at Computex this year, continuing to innovate despite the death of Moore’s Law. And we discuss how Nvidia is combating this reality, with a focus on making machines smarter rather than simply more powerful.
Logitech launches a pair of premium wireless mice
Logitech has announced long-awaited updates for two of its best wireless mice with the MX Master 2S and MX Anywhere 2S. Not only do the new peripherals add longer longer battery life and greater tracking accuracy, they come with a new piece of multi-desktop and multi-platform navigation software.
The first bummer of Computex 2017: the AMD Vega wait continues
While AMD has plenty to say of Ryzen this week during Computex, the firm remains tight-lipped on its AMD Vega graphics architecture.
Further to the point, AMD made a point during its announcements to say that new Vega graphics cards would not be shown until this year’s SIGGRAPH conference at the end of July.
So, it seems we likely won’t see the new Vega graphics cards on store shelves until this August at the earliest. Hold on just a little – OK, a lotta’ – bit longer, folks.
Asus unleashes monster gaming laptop with Ryzen CPU
Another big revelation was the first Ryzen-powered gaming laptop from Asus. The ROG Strix GL702ZC will run with a Ryzen 7 octo-core processor and a full discrete AMD Radeon RX 580 GPU, offering plenty of power under the hood. AMD also talked about its plans for Ryzen mobile APUs.
Snapdragon-powered mobile PCs to be made by Asus, HP and Lenovo
Microsoft and Qualcomm revealed more about their joint plans for mobile PCs powered by Snapdragon SoCs, with devices to be produced by Asus, HP and Lenovo. These will be thin-and-light fanless notebooks which run the full version of Windows 10.
We also chatted with Qualcomm’s VP of global product marketing, Don McGuire, who believes that the Snapdragon 835 will cause a fundamental shift in the way we use our PCs.
AMD reveals ripping new Ryzen 9 processors
Following Intel’s big Core i9 revelations seen earlier at Computex, AMD wasn’t to be outdone, taking to the stage to share some details of its Ryzen 9 Threadripper CPUs – which will be headed by a flagship monster 16-core (32-thread) processor.
Asus ROG shows off Ultrawide, mega-fast monitor
This 35-inch beast has a 21:9 aspect ratio with an Ultrawide QHD resolution (3440 x 1440) and a super-impressive 200Hz refresh rate. Along with G-Sync, HDR and Quantum dot technology, this is sure to dazzle. The upcoming Republic of Gaming Swift PG35VQ monitor from Asus may be arriving as early as Q4 of 2017, so keep your eyes peeled (although we doubt it’ll slip by unnoticed).
Samsung flips out a new Windows 10 convertible
Meet the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro, a 2-in-1 version of its Notebook 9 available in both 13 and 15-inch models that come packed with the firm’s famed mobile S-Pen stylus. Just like on its Galaxy Book, the S-Pen here does not need to be charged, bringing painless pen input to two new screen sizes of Samsung’s.
Zotac crafts the world’s smallest GTX 1080 Ti
Looking to build a rig with record ratios of performance per square inch? Then you’re gonna want to look into Zotac’s new Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Mini, the smallest version of the GPU yet. Launching in standard and liquid-cooled versions, both cards measure 9 inches long and feature snazzy “Spectra” lighting for as yet undisclosed prices. The firm also announced a new gaming brand with slim form factor “Meka” PCs.
Asus ROG Zephyrus goes to the Max(-Q) with an Nvidia GTX 1080
With Nvidia’s Max-Q laptop chip design in tow, this Asus gaming laptop brings GTX 1080 power to a laptop the size of a 15-inch MacBook Pro. The Active Aerodynamic System, which drops down part of the laptop’s underside to raise the machine at a slight angle and reveal an exhaust vent, is a key innovation making this possible. What’s more, we’ve got a hands on Asus ROG Zephyrus review.
Cooler Master’s new mechanical keyboard has its own processor
Cooler Master has revealed a host of peripherals over at Computex, including a new flagship mechanical keyboard, alongside a pair of mice, a keyboard and mouse set, gaming headset, and fresh PC cases. The flagship keyboard has its own processor and memory allowing for some neat tricks, and there’s plentiful RGB lighting on-board.
MSI shows off a clutch of gaming laptops with seriously nifty tech
MSI is having a busy time at the show, having revealed a load more laptops. These include the latest ‘Raider’ gaming laptops, the GE63VR and GE73VR, which boast a 120Hz display that’s basically a gamer’s dream-screen.
The company has also sneaked in new Stealth Pro gaming notebooks packing the same tasty displays, and also benefiting from Nvidia’s innovative new Max-Q technology, which was unveiled earlier at Computex.
Now, we’ve got our hands-on MSI GT75VR Titan review to give an idea of where the firm is headed next in its big-and-bad lines of laptops.
Intel announces its next generation of Intel Core-X processors
Intel’s keynote on Tuesday touched on a number of subjects, including smart cities and the future of computing.
However, it was the launch of its new line of Intel Core-X processors, including the incredible 18-core i9 CPU that really got us excited.
Nvidia brings Max-Q technology to gaming laptop designs
Nvidia’s keynote highlighted the launch of its Max-Q technology. This exciting new tech will make gaming PCs more powerful, as well as lighter and slimmer. Since then, we’ve seen gaming laptop vendors like Acer, Asus, Gigabyte and MSI announce their first devices making use of the technology.
Taking stock of Acer’s new slimline Predator gaming laptop
We took Acer’s Predator Triton 700 ultra-thin gaming notebook for a hands-on spin. It’s a pricey behemoth of a machine, but can this notebook’s svelte nature, mechanical keyboard and nifty cooling system justify the price tag?
Dell unveils a trio of new all-AMD desktops for media and gaming
Dell has spoilt us with three brand new, all-AMD desktop PCs. Specifically, an Inspiron all-in-one PC has been shown in both 24- and- 27-inch varieties, as well as a new gaming desktop in disguise.
Dell also took the Computex stage as the opportunity to unveil its first-ever Inspiron gaming desktop, designed to bring near-boutique gaming PC quality to buyers for far less than the real deal. We’ll have hands on reviews of these machines soon.
Gigabyte shows off its new Aorus gaming laptops
Gigabyte has given us a closer look at its Aorus gaming laptops at Computex 2017, with the Aorus X9, Aorus X5 MD and Aorus X7 DT all putting in an appearance.
Gigabyte also gave us global launch-dates for all its upcoming gaming laptops.
MSI takes the wraps off a beastly gaming laptop
MSI showed off its new monster of a gaming laptop, the GT75VR Titan, which benefits from an innovative low-profile mechanical keyboard and some top-notch hardware including a beefy Core i7 CPU (which can be overclocked to 4GHz) plus options on SLI graphics cards.
Spills and thrills with Corsair’s new gaming keyboard
Corsair introduced a new mechanical keyboard, the K68, which is a hardy peripheral designed to withstand the likes of drink spills, being water and dust-resistant.
Test driving the new Asus ZenBook Flip S
Asus claims that the ZenBook Flip S is the thinnest convertible laptop in the world, and it won’t break the bank either. We’ve been having a play with this 2-in-1 at Computex: can it deliver without making too many compromises?
Asus ZenBook Pro looks to be a svelte yet powerful laptop
Thin but powerful? It’s a winning combination, and one that the Asus ZenBook Pro seemingly nails with flair. Check out our full hands-on with this laptop which has the potential to be a smash hit for a number of reasons.
These are the best tips for Black Friday … prepare your wallets
Darren Allen has also contributed to this report
This firm based out of the very same country Computex is held annually has already shown its cards regarding the big show. With that, we know with certainty that we can expect to get hands-on time with Acer’s Nitro 5 gaming laptop as well as its Acer Spin 1 2-in-1 laptop and new Android tablets with Quantum Dot displays.
Having just come off of its massive annual media event in New York City this past April, chances are slim that we’ll see much more from Acer during Computex. If we had to wildly guess, perhaps Acer will have more in PC gaming hardware to show off, that being a major focus of the show these days – just don’t hold your breath.
Having been teasing its new Vega graphics chip architecture for what seems like eons now, AMD will perhaps choose Computex as the place we’ll finally see new the first Vega graphics cards. After all, we’ve at least already seen the developer-grade Radeon Vega Frontier Edition. We have to be close to seeing the future of PC gaming on AMD hardware by this point.
Speaking of which, we’ve been hearing plenty over the past few weeks of the next wave of AMD Ryzen processors, the Ryzen 9 Threadripper series. Designed to compete with Intel’s supposed Core i9 line of high-end chips, Threadripper will come rocking 16-core processors that may be slower than Ryzen 7 CPUs in frequency, but far more ready to handle multifaceted workloads.
Computex would be the perfect venue to showcase the power of not only Vega GPUs, but these new Threadripper CPUs as well.
This is one of the firms we know the least about in regards to what it might have to show during Computex 2017. That said, we do know that Asus will hold press conferences for both its core, eponymous brand and its gaming brand, Republic of Gamers (ROG).
We’ve heard murmurs of the next Asus Zenbook Flip, the UX370, to succeed the current UX360, which we enjoyed quite a bit. On the gaming front, Asus ROG has outright teased a gaming laptop powered by Ryzen to be shown at Computex in the above looping video. Here’s to hoping that’s an all-AMD build with graphics that rhyme with “mega”.
Frankly, we’ve seen very little in the way of leaks and rumors in the lead up to Computex, which doesn’t give us much, if anything, to go off of. However, one thing that we’re at least hoping to see in more detail is Dell’s head-mounted display for Microsoft’s Windows 10 Holographic program.
With the headset expected to launch later this year alongside the rest of the lot, Computex would be a fine place to demonstrate its capabilities. We know for a fact that Dell will hold a press event during the show, so hopefully this will be the place to see Dell’s big dip into virtual reality – sorry, “mixed reality,” if you’re asking Microsoft.
The one thing we expect to hear more about from Intel at Computex is its rumored Core i9 line of processors. According to leaks, this new echelon of Intel CPUs will include new Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X models ranging from octa-core to dodeca-core dies.
Of course, the logic here is that Intel is preparing its defenses for the oncoming assault of AMD’s Threadripper Ryzen 9 processors. However, unlike AMD, Intel has yet to make anything official. The firm should change that during its press event scheduled during Computex.
This is another one of those component firms that won’t officially say much, if anything, about its plans (unlike a certain rosy rival) until it’s ready to discuss them in full. That said, Nvidia does tend to be leaky, and so we have talk of the firm’s Volta GPU architecture being prepared for a Q3 2017 launch, meaning any time after the end of June.
And, whaddya know, that’s just in time AMD Vega’s expected debut. Specifically, sites like WCCFTech report to have heard that Volta will be brought to bear through GTX 20-series GPUs.
If this is what Nvidia truly has in store for its Computex press event, then this ought to be a knock-down, drag-out summer for the red and green teams.
Finally, we have the company that stands to shake up the show the most: Qualcomm. The firm has been largely silent on its plans to work with Microsoft to bring Windows 10 x86 app emulation to its next generation of Snapdragon processors since they were first announced last December.
It’s potentially the lynch pin in Microsoft’s mobile ambitions moving forward. Again, Computex would be the time to demonstrate how Qualcomm’s technology works and what types of new mobile devices running Windows 10, much less any, that it can enable.
You still can’t buy the Android-toting Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3, but HMD Global – the firm behind the new Nokia handsets – has confirmed exclusively to TechRadar that the trio will be upgraded to Android O (Android 8) once it’s available.
Android O is the next version of Google’s mobile platform and was announced at the search giant’s annual IO conference in May.
A spokesperson from HMD Global told TechRadar “the smartphones will get the Android O update once the new release is available from Google for their OEM partners, the same way HMD Global is committed to the monthly Android security updates.”
Everything you need to know about Android O
Not available right away
The Android O update is not slated to be available until Q3 2017 (September or October), and it’s unlikely the new Nokia smartphones will get the update right away.
The spokesperson told us they couldn’t comment on the arrival date for Android O on the Nokia 6, 5 and 3 – but in the past it has sometimes taken manufacturers months to roll out new software.
There is a potential silver lining for the Nokia 6, 5 and 3 though, as they run an almost stock version of Android 7 – which should make the switch to Android 8 quicker and easier.
We hope it’ll be available before Christmas, making the new Nokias some of the first phones to get the update.

If you’re one of the thousands of Australian NBN customers who’ve suffered from slower-than-expected internet speeds, help might finally be on the way.
Back in February, NBN Co announced a new discount scheme for its capacity-based Connectivity Virtual Circuit (CVC) charges, but it’s only today that those reductions actually go into effect.
CVC pricing has to do with how the national broadband service sells wholesale access to retail service providers (RSPs), like your ISP. Historically, these charges have been high: $20 per Mbps per month when the service began, then was brought down to $17.50 in November 2014. Last year, the price fell to $15.25.
Starting today, the discounts will increase based on how many end-users the RSP has connected. In theory, that means ISPs are incentivised to add more overall bandwidth as their customer base grows.
For the end user
boasted that the broadband service was now available to over 5 million premises, but less than half of those have signed up for the service. NBN Co is hoping this new discount scheme should also help boost those numbers.
The lower supplier cost should especially benefit major resellers like Telstra, Optus and TPG, as they can buy more CVC and provide high-speed internet to more customers, thus reducing the congestion that’s been plaguing some parts of the network, particularly during peak times.
Looking for a better broadband connection? at the moment.
Amazon Echo and Google Home likely won’t make it to Christmas without a little extra competition, as it appears Apple’s smart speaker debut has been put into motion.
A Siri-powered speaker from the iPhone maker has reportedly entered production, with an announcement to follow as soon as next week during Apple’s WWDC 2017 event, sources familiar with the project tell Bloomberg.
Though the unveiling of Apple’s rumored Siri Speaker could come as soon as June 5, the report says it’s not expected to ship out until later this year.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard tell that a Siri Speaker would show at WWDC. KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted earlier this month that Apple will reveal its smart speaker at the conference, alongside a new iPad.
Several other reports and rumors also placed their chips on a Siri Speaker reveal at WWDC, and we can’t blame them — Amazon Echo and Google Home have found an audience, leaving Apple and its suite of products like Apple Music, Apple Homekit, AirPlay, and almost entirely unattended by the smart speaker market.
As for when we’ll get the official word on the Siri Speaker, we only have to wait until this coming Monday, where we also plan to learn more about what Apple has in store for other products like the iPad Pro, iPhone SE 2, the MacBook, and possibly even iOS 11.
Amazon Echo vs Google Home: Which smart speaker is best (so far)?
